CAROL CRICHTON SHARKEY
BORN MANILA, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS

Following graduation from Burlingame, I went to San Mateo College for a year before heading to Scotland and my father's College, Glasgow University where I finished my studies. While there, I had the wonderful opportunity of getting to know all my British family, ¬many aunts, uncles and cousins. Spent the holidays roaming the Continent and was bitten by the travel bug. On returning to the USA, decided to join UAL as a stewardess (they were called that at the time) and continue seeing the world. I flew and traveled extensively – discounted airfares and passes on foreign carriers – a perk a good Scot couldn't let pass. After 4 years I resigned to marry William Sharkey, a lawyer from Philadelphia.

We lived in Philly for several years and our 3 sons were born there-Brian 40, Kevin 38 and Craig 36. We then moved to Louisville, KY-a wonderful city and, of course, the Kentucky Derby which is bigger than Christmas! We continued our trek South with Bill's career and have now been in Atlanta for over 25 years.

Spent many years involved with my sons' activities--sports, school functions, carpooling and being on the Boards of their various schools. They left for college and obviously had so much fun, they all decided to go on to Graduate School. Brian went to Williams College in Massachusetts (Jr. year spent in England) and the University of Maryland; Kevin went to Duke and Emory Medical School and Craig to Duke and Vanderbilt Law School. The expense is paying off-- I have all my medical and legal problems taken care of "in-house". Two are married and we now have 4 grandchildren-3 girls and a boy. None of the boys live in Atlanta so I have to face that awful Atlanta Airport when I go to visit-Columbia, Md., Charlotte, NC and Fayetteville, AK.
Once the boys were gone, I decided to go back to my love of travel. Bill doesn't enjoy traveling but I had many friends who were willing to "take off" anytime. Started with China about 18 yrs ago- long before it started to adopt our modern culture and it was a truly fascinating trip. Ditto for East Europe. I did have 2 of my "dream" trips come true-took a journey across Russia on the Siberian Railroad (think very primitive) and spent 3 weeks in India.
I had visited India before but not the Southern part which is so totally different from the North- the poverty and constant begging is not as prevalent. Several trips to Europe were included to visit family-many cousins still abroad and one of my sisters lives in Edinburgh. I feel very fortunate that I have been able to see so much of the world-now I just want to stay home!

I'm active in the Atlanta Community and have served on the Boards of The History Center, Shepherd Spinal Center, Salvation Army and The Symphony and have participated in various charitable fundraisers. For fun, I play bridge; attend my Garden Club, International Women's Club and DBE meetings and luncheons. I do look forward to summer when all the activities stop and I can just vegetate!!
