Rod Rose

Autobiography submitted for the 40th Reunion in 1995

From BHS to class of ‘59 at UC Berkeley. Highlights: Bowles Hall resident, Political Science major, Daily Cal, crew coxswain, and meeting Valerie Joan Lechner from North Hollywood. Married while I was first year law student at Hastings, but law career not for me. #1 son on the way, we moved to Southern California for better job opportunities and child-raising environment. Graduate studies in public administration and business at Long Beach State and Fullerton. Tried several administrative positions, including first marketing director of FHP (it became a multi-billion dollar HMO in spite of me). Real career began in 1966 at UC Irvine as a business officer in School of Physical Sciences. So ...26 years as administrator, 8 at UC Irvine and 17 at UCLA as Director of Capital Planning.

In 1991, joined JCM Group, a project management firm based in LA specializing in developing & managing major facilities: universities, libraries, hospitals, performing arts facilities, civic buildings, and airports. Currently Vice President, heading consulting group. We focus on strategic planning for our clients, mostly public and institutional.

Along the way ... Toastmaster of the Year, Executive Secretary of Society of Research Administrators, founding publisher/managing editor of SRA Journal; past President of Society for College and University Planning, and 10 years on Board of Directors; consultant to colleges & univer¬sities & public agencies; frequent speaker at conferences, conduct dozens of workshops & seminars on planning; and testify before boards, commissions, & California State legislature on policy and capital issues.

Val & I will celebrate 36th anniversary this December,1995. We have three children: David, Ken, and Jackie. One grandchild and one on the way (both Jackie's), one step-grandchild (David and Mary), and Ken is too busy making money to find serious girlfriend - too bad, he'll make a great catch! We're proud of them all.

We travel a lot - whenever and wherever we can. It's our favorite hobby and our retirement objective. To prepare, we bought Devonshire Travel in Chatsworth so we could help others plan great trips too. Val is the financial genius; I'd mess up the business. But she works full¬time at UCLA as Administrative Analyst in the Music Dept., so travel agency is managed on a day-to-day basis by others. Once a planner, always a planner. But I still play jazz piano and love photography too.

We live in Calabasas, just repaired our house after serious damage from Northridge quake. And, of course, we love the Bruins, particularly basketball. Had to choose one of UC schools. Family has been either student or staff at four campuses.

(Editor’s note)

Along the way, Rod has earned much professional recognition which we gleaned from the Internet. The first citation we found was from the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP).
