Cathy Marken Dolton

Biographical Sketch

After I left BHS I went to UC Berkeley for two years. In 1957 I married fellow Roosevelt and BHS ('53) classmate, Ted Dolton. In 1959 Ted began his ROTC 1st Lt. obligation at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, which gave us a great chance to travel the East Coast for two years. Our son, Larry was born in 1959 shortly after we arrived on the Army base.

We came back to California to live in Costa Mesa for four years where our daughter, Sharon was born in 1963. In 1965 we returned to the Bay Area, bought a house in Los Altos and settled in. In 1982, ready for a change, we moved to Palo Alto where we are now after twenty-three years.

In the late 70's I changed my status from stay-at-home mom to student when I returned to San Jose State to earn a degree in English Literature. In 1977 there were three graduations in our family--Sharon from Jr. High, Larry from High School and mine from SJSU.

I joined the work force doing publications for an economic research firm, technical writing for a medical instrument company and finally found my way to Stanford University where I worked for eleven years before I took early retirement. There I worked for Psychiatry, International Relations in the Africa program, and the last six years in an interdisciplinary program coordinating conferences and events.

1996 was the year both Ted and I retired (he from Lockheed). Community activities, fun with grandchildren, and traveling keep us more than busy. Curiosity and the spirit of adventure fuel our travels. We find much to delight, amuse and enlighten us in our travels around the world: Africa, China, Turkey, Greece, France, Italy, East Germany, Mexico, Costa Rica, and parts of the United States.

I am currently in an art docent-training program at the Palo Alto Art Center. One of my favorite pastimes is visiting art galleries and museums both at home and in our travels. I garden, belong to two book groups, enjoy hiking, wildflowers, jazz, and photography.
