My Life in a Peanut Shell
by Carol Clark Roberts

(Well, no, I don’t live in a peanut shell. I just mean to be brief.)

The present:
I live in a condo in Pleasanton with my cat, who is slowing down a bit with age as I am. But in all, we’re enjoying reasonably good health.

I had a brief 6 month retirement in the summer and fall of 2000, but by the beginning of 2001, the economy was slipping enough that I went back to my old job. I’m still there. I’m a programmer/analyst for Fujitsu Consulting doing the same type of work for our client, SBC, that I’ve done for the past 20 plus years. And I’ll probably keep at it another year or two.

I still enjoy hiking in the East Bay hills and have found friends who get as excited about wild flowers and nature as I do. We generally hike once a week.

I also enjoy my 3 children and 3 grandchildren, who are all now living in the bay area. My two bachelor sons finally both got married in the last two years, so my family is growing and could maybe grow a little more one day. ?

The past:
As reported in the 40th reunion bio, after leaving BHS, I graduated from Stanford in ’59 in elementary education. Married Harry Roberts the same year. Taught school for three years, then stayed home to raise my family – Laurie, Doug and Greg – until the late 70’s.

Went to work for SBC in ‘77 and stayed with them for many years enjoying a different career in computer programming.

Harry and I had 35 years together, but then were separated for 3 years before he died in ’98.

The future:
Don’t we all wish we knew the future? Well, maybe not. I plan to keep working a while. When I eventually retire again, I’ll probably just take it easy.

One big event coming up the end of May 2005 is a trip to South Africa. My younger son married a young woman from Durban, South Africa, in a very brief ceremony at the county clerk’s office. She wants a ‘real wedding’ in her hometown. So we are all going to S.A. for the wedding and to play tourist.

Final note:
School days are nostalgic ones for me. I have many fond memories of BHS and my Burlingame friends. I’ve found e-mail the perfect way to keep in touch with new and old friends. Would love to hear from you.
