Biographical Sketch, April 2005

Following graduation from BHS I first enrolled at UCLA, but then transferred to UC Berkeley where I earned a BA in History. I have always lived in the Bay Area, currently in Emeryville in a former corporate party pad that we totally remodeled.

My entire career has been spent in banking, mostly in credit administration, and along the way I was president of two small local banks. I finally retired in 1998.

My wife, Liz (who’s first husband was a Frenchman named Vernaelde), and I were married in 1996. Liz was born in France (her father was in the U.S. Air Force) and was a French major at UC Davis. She and her two children speak fluent French. The name Vernaelde is of Flemish extraction.
Liz has been in banking most of her career, and was most recently with the Bank of America here in Emeryville. She is taking some time off and will be returning to the work force later on this summer.

I have two sons by a first marriage, Greig and Jason, and two stepchildren, Jamie and Stephan Vernaelde.

Greig earned a chemical engineering degree from UC Berkeley and is currently president of a medical instruments company in southern California. He, and wife, Amy, and daughter, Devin, live in Laguna Beach.

Jason earned a Bachelor’s degree from UC Davis, then a Master’s degree from UC San Diego, then on to a JD degree (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of San Francisco. He is an attorney in Palo Alto and lives in Piedmont with wife Sharon Saffanson and daughters Emma, Claire, and Charlotte.
Stephan is a senior at Santa Clara University and will graduate in June 2005 with a degree in Accounting.

Jamie is a sophomore at UC Davis (her mother’s alma mater) majoring in International Relations and French. She will spend her junior year in France.
I gave up golf when Stephan became a 2 handicap. My other hobby is target shooting and reloading for relaxation. I was dragged kicking and screaming into the computer age, but now spend time surfing the Internet, especially my various shooting forums, and the forum for my newest baby, a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire, basically a Mercedes 320 with a Ghia body.

When I retired I grew a ponytail that lasted for six years. The ponytail is gone now, but I still have my earring.

I hope to see many of you at our 50th Reunion in October.

Pete.
